AI Research Mentoring

I provide one-to-one research mentoring in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for students, researchers, and professionals who need technical guidance throughout their research journey.

Research Mentoring is designed to help you develop a stronger research direction, make informed methodological decisions, design meaningful experiments, understand unfamiliar concepts or methods, and independently conduct high-quality AI research. Mentoring may also include discussion and feedback on research drafts, experimental results, and academic writing.

For researchers who already have a manuscript or research results ready for publication, I also provide Publication Mentoring. This includes guidance on manuscript improvement, journal or conference selection, pre-submission review, proofreading, responding to reviewers, and revision throughout the publication process. Publication decisions remain with the respective editors and reviewers. The acceptance of the manuscript cannot be guaranteed.

You can contact me via My LinkedIn or send me an email directly at gusti.alfarisy[at]gmail.com.

How I Can Help

Research mentoring can cover different stages of an AI research project, from an initial idea to experimental evaluation.

Potential mentoring topics include:

  • Research problem formulation
  • Identifying research gaps and opportunities
  • Research methodology development
  • Dataset and experimental design
  • Machine learning and deep learning model selection
  • Experimental strategy
  • Model evaluation and comparison
  • Result interpretation
  • Research troubleshooting
  • Planning further experiments
  • Technical discussion of research manuscripts

The mentoring process focuses not only on solving an immediate technical problem, but also on developing your ability to make independent research decisions.

Personalized Learning & Skill Development

Research mentoring is not limited to discussing research progress. When a topic, method, or tool required for your research is unfamiliar, part of the mentoring session can be used for personalized one-on-one learning.

I can help you understand relevant concepts, methods, or tools within my areas of expertise before applying them to your research. The depth and focus of the session will be adapted to your current knowledge and research needs.

This allows the mentoring process to combine research guidance, technical discussion, and targeted learning as needed.

Areas of Expertise

I can provide more specialized mentoring in areas related to my research and technical experience, including:

  • Machine Learning and Deep Learning
  • Deep Computer Vision
  • Image Classification and Recognition
  • Open-Set Recognition
  • Open-World Recognition
  • Continual and Lifelong Machine Learning
  • Edge AI and Lightweight Deep Learning
  • Biodiversity Informatics
  • Environmental and Agroecological AI
  • Agentic AI

Research topics outside these areas may also be considered when they are sufficiently related to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

Research Idea & Methodology

If you have a general research idea but are unsure how to turn it into a researchable problem, mentoring can help you systematically develop it into a feasible research direction.

This may involve:

  1. Understanding the research problem
  2. Reviewing the current technical approach
  3. Identifying potential research gaps
  4. Defining research questions
  5. Selecting appropriate methods
  6. Designing experiments
  7. Establishing evaluation criteria

The objective is to develop a research plan that is technically feasible and scientifically meaningful.

Who Is This For?

AI Research Mentoring may be suitable for:

  • Undergraduate students conducting AI research
  • Master’s students
  • PhD students
  • Early-career researchers
  • Lecturers entering AI-related research
  • Professionals conducting applied AI research
  • Researchers from other disciplines applying AI to their domain

You do not need to have a Computer Science background, but the mentoring topic should involve a problem where Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning plays a meaningful role.

Mentoring Format

Mentoring can be arranged as either a single research discussion or regular mentoring sessions for researchers who need continuous guidance.

A typical 50 minutes session may involve reviewing your current research progress, discussing technical challenges, evaluating possible solutions, and determining the next research steps.

For ongoing mentoring, progress can be reviewed periodically as experiments and research questions evolve.

Research Integrity

Research mentoring is intended to guide and strengthen your own research.

The service does not include:

  • Ghostwriting theses or research papers
  • Fabricating or manipulating experimental results
  • Guaranteeing publication in a particular journal
  • Completing academic assignments on behalf of students
  • Providing authorship in exchange for payment

Authorship, where applicable, should only arise from a genuine research collaboration involving substantial intellectual or scientific contribution.

Discuss Your Research

If you are working on an AI-related research problem and would like an independent perspective on your methodology, experiments, or research direction, feel free to contact me.

When contacting me, briefly describe your research topic, current research stage, and the main problem you would like to discuss.
